NaNoWrImO Chapter One

You ever wonder what life would be like if we were meta-humans? What? You don’t know what a meta-human is? Well how about super hero? Or super villain? Someone with an odd power you know like being able to freeze water just by thinking about it, or being able to fly and shoot omega beams from your eyes, or how about just being able to wait in line patiently at the DMV?

My names Trey Miller and I’ve always had a fascination with comic books, Saturday morning cartoons, and just everything that wasn’t normal. I had a giant sense of right and wrong, good and evil, and black and white. And I always wondered what life would be like if I could just do something no one else could, or had a power that no one else had. Like what if I could animate inanimate objects and make like, let’s say… a toaster dance around walk around, wouldn’t that be fun to watch? Or if I had a ring that worked off my willpower and imagination and shot out the things that I was thinking and how I was thinking them.

Whenever news about ancient times and folklore comes up on the news of the history channel I always feel a need to watch, to see if anyone or anything did something out of the ordinary. But nothing ever seemed to be along the lines of what I was looking for. But I was always fascinated with tails like Aladdin and the lamp I mean what would you do with three wishes? I only knew of one wish that I wanted and that was to make it possible to be meta-human, not everyone to be meta but some, I mean if everyone is special that’s just like saying everyone is born, there is nothing special about it.

So in order to figure out where to start looking, what do I do? Get a job at a library, and which library is best for that, why the library of congress of course, I may not be able to check anything out, but the hours I spent putting books away, cataloging books, and working my way up so that I would be able to have the freedom I need to do the research and construct an objective to bring powers into the world.

After working at the library for about five years people start to take interest in you, they wonder what is up with you and why you keep to yourself and always have your nose in a book, and my nose was always in a book, whether it be a graphic novel or a book about ancient Egypt or Greece. So I started to get a little group of friends, we were mostly geeks and nerds. But we all wanted the same goal.

Before I go on any further I want you to know we don’t want to be metas because we’re week, no it is because we want to be able to help people, to be able to make a difference in ways that no one can. To be able to stop a war before it begins, to make sure that disasters that claim the lives of so many are now disasters that claim so few.

Now as I introduce the group to you know that everything from here on out is current, so you won’t have me talking to you, I know it’s a shame we’ve been developing a relationship but don’t worry I’m still here for you. Now onto the group; there was Paul March, who had a degree in library science, Mitchell Aller who had a degree in ancient history and a great background in myths and legends, and then of course there was me Trey Miller, I had a dream… not to mention degrees in ancient history and library sciences. Both helping a lot in my quest, now onto the story.

Chapter One

“Seriously why the crap do they kill off superheros if they are just going to bring them back in like 50 issues?” Paul spat as he put down last month’s Batman. “Superman, Captain America, Hal Jordan, Barry Allen. And on and on the list goes, why can’t some of these people just stay dead?”

“It’s not in the public eye,” I said looking up from my piping hot cup of earl grey tea and my book on hieroglyphics.

“I may like Dick Grayson as Batman, but the public will always know Bruce Wayne as him, it just doesn’t meet the interest of those who don’t read comics, no one wants them to make a movie about someone they don’t know.”

“Still it is really starting to stress me out.” Paul said as he pulled his coffee and book on the Pyramids of Giza.

“Say where is Mitch anyways? Shouldn’t he be here slaving over these books with us? I mean we are planning an archeological expedition and the guy with all the connections isn’t even here.”

“He texted me to tell me he would be late,” I said not looking up from my book. “Something about, having to meet with Mr. Arber to get everything in order for Sunday.”

Oh did I not mention that we were going to Egypt? Well it kind of just came up to us too. We have a guy who comes into the library a lot doing who knows what… Probably reading cause that of course is what most people do at a library. But from what we gather he is extremely wealthy, we don’t know how he acquired his wealth it just isn’t one of those things you bring up in passing. But it’s Friday and we leave for Egypt in two days. So were all a little on edge, we don’t really know how were getting anywhere, nothing it is all hazy and just plain annoying and has us on edge.

The thing I dislike about the library is the huge freaking doors; they make a little to much noise for my liking. It always seems to disrupt my train of thought. But this time as I looked up and saw Mitch and a tall woman in a fancy business suit.

“Hey Paul, whose that with Mitch?” I asked puzzled, Mitch was a very shy guy and never liked being around woman… my guess is that he was hurt badly by one and still hasn’t gotten over it.

“I have no idea,” Paul said as his jaw dropping. “But I mean wow, who would have thought about Mitch with a bombshell like that.”

In deed she was a bomb shell, if you’re into the whole tall, slender, curvy, and dark hair sort of woman. But then again Paul was always chasing woman, never really succeeding. All the relationships he did have are always with woman who take advantage of him and then end up leaving him heartbroken and down trodden. And me well… I try not to look for love, there was one girl but I screwed it up…

“Paul, Trey, I would like you to meet Ashley Galisto, she is going to be our guide on our little excursion.” Mitch said as he walked up to the table that we were all sitting around. “Mr. Arnold assigned her to us, and he also gave us a private jet.”

“Are you kidding me?” Paul said his jaw dropping lower than ever.

“Not at all Mr. March,” Ashley said a smile spreading across her fair and elegant face. “Mr. Arnold wants you all to be as comfortable as possible on the way over, back, and of course why you are over there. “

“And you will be going with us Miss Gallisto?” I asked wondering if she would be an asset or just a hindrance.

“Of course, I am supposed to keep you guys on track.” Ashley said putting a glossy black briefcase on the desk in front of us. “And please I would like all of you to call me Ashley, as I plan on making this trip as formal and relaxing as possible. Now Mr. Arnold has a few things for you before you leave, these items are to make your financial expenses and needs easier for you before you leave.”

Ashley handed us all goldenrod colored envelopes, as we dumped them all out each of the envelopes contained, a satellite phone, a company credit card, a case for each of their passports, and a handy emergency med kit no bigger than a man’s wallet.

“Well Ashley I assume that you will give our gratitude to Mr. Arnold,” I said smiling as I put the new credit card in my wallet and put everything else back into the package where it came from.

“I have arranged for the four of us to go shopping tomorrow for this expedition” Ashley said as she rubbed sleep from her eyes. “We should be able to find everything we need at a sporting goods store, also get any cloths or non perishable items. We should all meet back here at ten in the morning, now if you don’t have any questions or if you could just hold them till tomorrow, I am rather tired and would like to go home and get some rest, we have a long day ahead of us, I suggest that you all do the same.”

“I suppose we should head back to our abodes and get some shut eye.” Paul said as he stretched and scratched his head. “I’ll see you guys tomorrow.”

“Well Mitch should we head back to our apartment?” I asked as I stood up stretched, and cracked my back by twisting.

“I suppose, do you want to drive or should I?” Mitch said pulling the keys out of his pocket and standing from his chair.

“You can drive; I’ve been straining my eyes all day on ancient maps and hieroglyphics. I just want to rest them for right now.” I said as we made our way to the exit.

Our car was in a special parking lot that was built just for employees of the library. After Mitch unlocked it I got into the passenger seat and almost immediately differed off into a slumber.

I was in a court room and I was trying to argue why my right hand shouldn’t be cut off, and the judge just kept glowering and me telling me that it was to late to use it that I was to scared. But then my hand began to glow an eerie cold blue glow and the words “Hope” stenciled themselves across the back of my hand. As I looked down at them inside of the “Hope” the phrase “Everything comes to he who waits” was inside each one of the letters. And all of a sudden the judge slammed down his gavel but the strange thing about the gavel was that it wasn’t normal it was like the Mjolnir, and as it made contact with the wood a blinding flash illuminated and disintegrated the room, I was standing on nothing just then I felt a shacking and I woke to find myself being shaken awake by Mitch we were parked outside of our apartment now.

“Dude are you alright?” Mitch asked concern hinted in his voice and worry etched on his face.

“Fine I mumbled, just another strange dream.” I said still shaking.

“You don’t remember it do you?” Mitch Asked as we got out of the car and made our way towards our apartment.

“I never do.” I said, and it was true no matter if it was a dream or a nightmare I never remembered my dreams they always seemed to slip away and diminish as soon as I woke, it was very annoying because I felt the after effects of the dreams, if it was good I just feel somewhat happy but if it were bad I am all shaky and nervous. This time I was shaking, it was rather annoying when this happened, but hey you have to live with things.

“Well if you need anything you know my room is right over there.” Mitch pointed to the room right next to mine.

“I know thanks man,” I said walking into our kitchen and pulling a mug from the cupboard. “I think I am just going to have a cup of tea and head to bed, we have a huge day ahead of us tomorrow and I want to be as ready as possible.”

“Alright well I will see you in the morning, sleep tight dude.” Mitch said as he made way to go brush his teeth and go to bed.

It was nice having Mitch as a roommate, he was kind and considerate, he knows what a broken heart feels like, he knows what a broken home feels like, he wears his heart right out there on his sleeve just like myself. I think it must be the reason we can get along so well.

I filled the cup at the sink and placed it into the microwave, hit the number 2 and just waited for my water to become hot enough. As I waited I rummaged in the cupboard next the refrigerator for a few tea bags. I like taking a special kind of tea that helps me sleep at night it calms the nerves and leaves for a nice tranquil relaxing sleep.

After my water was done I popped two tea bags into the water and made my way to my bedroom. It was the end of the fall season and getting rather cold; I pulled out some nice thick sleep pants out of my dresser drawer and pulled on a long sleeved shirt. One thing I enjoyed while sleeping was being warm.

I finished my tea and then headed to the bathroom to brush my teeth and evacuate my bowls. After doing so and reading an article about the latest happenings in the world of smart phones, he set in for bed laying down and crawling under the covers. My room and bed seemed especially empty tonight; he was missing a former love. A flame that never really burnt out, and as I thought of her I slowly drifted off into a land where my dreams made perfect sense but I just couldn’t remember them.
